How to Refresh Your Kids Room to Create a Space You’ll Both Love
Use a New Rug to Infuse Color Into the Space.
Most kids love bright colors, and while the thought of painting their walls some offensively bright color might make you cringe, there’s a much easier alternative to infuse their favorite colors into their room: with a new rug! Anytime I am designing a space, a new rug is a must-have because it’s one of the easiest ways to effortlessly transform any space. Knowing that my daughter loves color, I decided to bring more color into her room by adding this beautiful Loloi Loren Terracotta Sky rug. The colors brighten up this space and the pattern of it lends a sophisticated yet playful vibe to her room. Loloi has such an incredible selection of rugs, and the quality is absolutely amazing! I love them so much that this is actually the second Loloi rug I own!
Involve Your Kids in the Process of Creating The Space
I also really encourage you to get your kids involved in the hands-on process of creating the room. Kids are naturally creative and they love doing things with their parents, so this is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your child, being creative together. Let them decide what they will hang on their hooks or place on their shelves. Let them decide which wall the art will hang on. Have them help unroll the rug or set the throw pillows on the bed. I even let my kids help me paint. Shocker, right?! But it’s true. I do. Does it take longer when they help? Yes. Do I have to fight the urge to say ‘no’ when they are setting things up differently than I would? Yes. But does it help create a space that truly reflects the child and allows them to creatively express themselves? Absolutely yes. And I think there is something really beautiful about that.
Look for Throw Pillows with Texture & Fun Details
Hands down, throw pillows are my favorite thing to add to a room. They make a space feel cozy and welcoming. I’m always looking for throw pillows that have great texture, because texture is what keeps a space from falling flat. But for a child’s room I also make sure to look for pillows with fun details like tassels, fringe, and pom-poms. Those details add a subtle air of whimsy and playfulness to the pillows, which is exactly what you want in a child’s room!
Use the “Magic Formula” for Decision Making
As my kids are growing up, I’m noticing they have more and more opinions about what they do and don’t like in their rooms. And rather than just imposing my ideas on them, I want them to have a voice. I want them to help me create a room they’ll love, and not just be passive bystanders. So this is the magic formula I’ve found that works perfectly for making decisions everyone is happy with in a kids room (I heard this somewhere years ago so I can’t take credit for it being original, but it’s too good not to share!): Whenever there is a significant design choice to make in a room, you first narrow it down to several options on your own. Then show those options to your child and let them choose which one they want. We did this several months ago when it was time to paint my daughter’s room. I narrowed it down to 3 paint colors (pale pink, oatmeal, or crisp white) and let her have the final choice. By narrowing it down first, I was able to avoid colors like neon green or flourescent orange. And yet she was happy because she had the final say. I highly recommend the “Mom narrows it down, and the kiddo makes the final choice” approach because it really is a win/win scenario that leaves both you and your child feeling good about the selection!
Think on Their Level
Often times we hang things and store things at adult eye-level, because that is where we are. It’s where we see and do life. But in a child’s room we should make sure things are easily accessible on their level. Hang hooks lower so they can actually reach them. Keep books in a bin on a low shelf so they are readily accessible. Keep extra toys or stuffed animals in baskets on the floor. Doing this not only enables children to actually function better in their space, but it also enables them to be part of the process for cleaning up their own things and having a sense of ownership for taking care of their space.
And most of all…just have fun with it! Your child doesn’t care about having a magazine-worthy room that their fabulous designer mom got all the accolades for. They care about having a space where they feel comfortable and safe and where they are surrounded by things they like that make them happy. And that is what truly matters most. So have fun creating a space WITH your child. A space that you both can love and enjoy and thrive in!
