How to Create Your Own Halloween Boxtume using Amazon Prime boxes
This post is sponsored by Amazon Prime but all ideas are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support me.
When thinking about Halloween costumes this year, I decided to get creative and repurpose Amazon Prime boxes into a costume (aka: Boxtume!). Using things I had around my house, I decided it was only fitting to create a paint can & paint brush #boxtumes, since paint is my solution to pretty much any home decor dilemma, haha. I love that upcycling these boxes not only saved me money, but it was resourceful and fun too! If you decide to create your very own boxtume, be share it on social, tagging @amazon and #boxtumes!
Step by Step Guide to Making our #Boxtumes:
Getting started:
You will need the following Supplies:
A medium to large Amazon box – completely unfolded
A small Amazon box
Wide masking tape or Duct tape
Paint and brush
Hot glue and gun
Tin Foil
Floor Broom
Cardboard Tubing
Pipe Insulator
Step 1
Preparing the Box:
Grab a large Amazon box. Hold the box so the closure flaps are at the top and the bottom. Begin to bend the box slightly to break the flat surface. You will need to do this all the way around the box. This will make the box pliable to begin forming the shape of your paint can.
At the top of your box you will need to tape the openings of the closure flaps. I simply took a piece of duct tape and ran it lengthwise to be sure the cut piece was covered to give the appearance that it was a solid piece. Since the paint I will be using probably will not adhere to the duct tape, I layered a piece of masking tape over it.
Step 2
Painting the Paint Can Drips:
If you can draw sloping, dipping and sloppy lines, this is for you! I simply drew a wavy line with big rounded dips around the box to give the appearance of a can that has been used. I was anywhere from 2 inches from the top of the paint can(box) to 5 inches down. After drawing the lines, just grab your paint brush and start painting above your wavy line with the color of your choice. I used a smaller brush to edge the wavy line to really give the appearance of the paint running down the can.
Step 3
Adding Paint Can Handle:
I purchased a pipe insulator to use for the paint can handle. If you notice, there is already a cut that runs the length of the covering. I knew I wanted to make an additional cut and so it would slide onto the box. I cut an additional slit on the opposite side about 2 inches down on both ends of the covering. You may need to adjust the length. After measuring, I took about 3 inches off of one of the ends to make it more proportional. After figuring out the length, you simply hot glue the covering to the box paint can. You will have to hold it for a minute or two until the glue cools.
Step 4
Paint Brush Time:
I used a wide bristle broom that I already owned to make the paint brush. Grab a small Amazon box to cut the the wood handle shape from the bristles to the handle of the paint brush. I made sure the piece went completely around the head of the broom head and then hot glued it on. After that was complete, I covered the cardboard piece with tin foil. I suggest the heavy duty foil to help with the possible tearing since tin foil can be delicate. I used hot glue and tape to secure the foil to the cardboard. Then, I slid the cardboard tubing onto the broom handle. My cardboard tubing was not long enough to cover the broom handle so I cut the handle to fit inside the cardboard tube. I secured the tubing to the broom handle with hot glue.
Step 5
Paint Brush Details:
Now for the fun! I wanted to make the paint brush appear that it had already been used to paint so I simply dipped the bristles into a tray of white paint. I only covered about 2 1/2 inches to give it that fun flair. I wanted to add a realistic details so I grabbed a permanent marker and drew lines on the tinfoil and an oval in the center.
My Finished Boxtume!
This fun and creative project can be done in an afternoon using things you have around your house and Amazon Prime boxes! You can get creative by using fun paint colors, a bigger broom as the paint brush or make a family of paint cans big and small. I definitely encourage you to get creative with those Amazon boxes and make your very own Boxtume! Be sure to share it on social, tagging @amazon and #boxtumes.
