I’ve had many conversations where people tell me that they feel like rooms in their home are just falling flat. Often times, they’ve even purchased items for the room recently, but still are not in love with the space. They feel like something is missing and they aren’t sure what?! While there can be a variety of reasons for this, often times one of the main culprits is a lack of texture.
Every good space needs TEXTURE!
But knowing that texture may be the missing ingredient in your space is not enough. You need to know how to add it in. And the good news is that it’s a simple fix!
So here are 4 simple ways to add texture to a room to transform it into that complete well-designed welcoming space you desire to have! The best part about these is that they are common and affordable solutions, and I’ve even linked some of my favorites for you, to help you easily finish those spaces in your homes asap!
Any good space needs a basket (or two, or three!) I recommend you look for natural woven baskets with a thick chunky texture. Use the basket to hold a plant, to corral kids toys, to hold books, or even create a gallery wall of flat woven baskets…anything! Baskets are an easy way to add texture and functionality to a space!
Helpful hint: when shopping for a baskets, also keep in mind the undertones in the basket…does it skew orange, or honey colored, white washed, or dark brown? Make sure the tone of the basket vibes well with the décor in your room.
Walls are a great place to add some texture to a space! Lucky for you, with the recent surge in popularity of woven wall hangings and macramé, this is an easy thing to accomplish! If you like plants (and who doesn’t?!), get some hanging macramé plant hangers. If you’re trying to incorporate a pop of color to a space, find a woven wall hanging with that color and add it to the space.
Not all throw pillows are created equally. If you’re like me, you may have purchased a sofa some time in your life that came sporting a matching pair of free pillows. But let’s be honest, those pillow typically lack style and they definitely lack texture. So you’ve got to freshen it up by seeking out pillows that have great texture. If you’re shopping in-store, physically run your hand over the surface of the pillows and choose ones that have varied texture, not ones that feel flat as your run your hands over them. If you’re shopping online, look for fabrics that are hand-loomed or linen or have added fringe on them. Don’t reserve pillows just for the living room and bedroom either. Add one to an office chair or a dining chair or the kids playroom. They are a great way to add texture to any space, and they make it cozier too!
Blankets are an effortless way to add texture to a space. My favorites are chunky cable knits, and lightweight muslin or nubby linen ones. Also, keep an eye out for blankets with pom-poms, tassels, or fringe, which also add texture to a space. The best part about blankets is that they literally require no effort. Just purchase it and drape it across a sofa, bench or blanket ladder. It’s that simple!
So what are you waiting for?! Find a space in your home that is falling flat, and go get some texture added in to that space, using these 4 easy techniques!
